Two mirrors, one circuit

Hybrids

Deep time made two mistakes, one in each world, and they match. Each carries a fragment of the god who belongs to the other sky. Nobody designed them — which is what makes them the only door.

Character sheet for Fridan: a man in his mid-thirties in a dark field jacket, with a second portrait showing his eyes turned gold after the Sphere.

Earth 1 human · Balian fragment

Fridan

An ordinary man from Nor Yesey with a strand of Balian's lineage buried in his genome. Earth 2's probability engine scanned billions of minds and found him — not for who he is, but for what he could be plugged into.

He was meant to wake up remembering nothing. Interference broke the memory suppression, and he woke remembering everything.

Character sheet for Uxies: a Virden woman with black and silver hair, golden freckles, layered scavenged armour threaded with neon.

Earth 2 Virden · Zalian fragment

Uxies

A Virden woman living in the noise of Earth 2, carrying a fragment of Zalian she has no name for. She feels a stillness nobody around her feels, and it has always set her slightly apart.

She does not know she is the other half of a circuit. She does not know anyone is looking for her.

Fridan is a human carrying Balian. Uxies is a Virden carrying Zalian. Put them at either end of the same line and the Barrier has, for the first time, something it cannot stop.
